Bad Decisions Got Jamie Where He’s At…

I uploaded E.M. Smith’s Bad Decisions (Agent Juliet Book 1) to my Kindle on a whim some time ago. It must have been one of those download-for-free offers, because nothing about the cover art suggested this would be my kind of reading. There’s something about heavy artillery that makes my skin crawl, and this cover has a darkly-clad soldier holding a massive automatic weapon over his shoulder as he saunters away from his reader into some dark, abandoned warehouse district.

But I’m an optimist, and I like to think I have an open mind–not to mention, I had also just unexpectedly approached the end of a completely unrelated non-fiction book (Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic) and I was looking for some easy entertainment for the remaining three-quarter hours I had on my commute.

And thus began my adventure with Agent Juliet, or Jamie Kendrick as he is known in today’s meme: “That’s what he said” Thursday. #TWHST: Trace amounts!... And I ain't screwing around with Talia! @masondixonsmith

(P.S. In case there is a #TWHST police: I’ll come right out and confess that I got a little creative with this one. This line was not said to a love interest… but I think the interlocutor felt pretty damn lucky that she nabbed her guy.)

Hopefully, this little image would give you some clues about the book. Despite my afore-alluded-to prejudices, I quickly found that I was enjoying this book! I even laughed out loud on my commuter train during some dialogue segments, because it really did remind me of living in the South. The above quote included.

Not to get into a full-on review (too late!) but E.M. Smith wrote this story in a trailer trash voice, without being corny, without laying it on thick. The first scene opened up with police breaking into Jamie’s RV and haulin’ his “buck-ass naked” self to the local police department. Things kept moving along at a good clip, sprinkled with funny quips, and then took a turn for some not entirely unexpected action and a chance at redemption–at a price, of course.

Will I read the next couple of books in the series? Maybe not right away–remember, I’m not one for shoot-em-ups–but I will probably download Books 2 (Bad Influences) and 3 (Bad Environment), out of this 5-Book series to have on hand–just in case I find myself in a bookless bind.

#TWHST

There’s a meme going around in readers’ circles on Thursdays, called “That’s What He Said Thursdays” or #TWHST for short. I found out about it a couple weeks ago and participated nearly right away. (Check out my other entries.) What I love about it, is that it makes reading, and sharing what you’re reading, social! So, I decided to commit to posting something weekly with a little bit of my own commentary.

HOW TO PLAY (JOIN THE FUN!)

The rules of participation are simple, and have been posted on Carrianne’s  Cuppa ‘n Critiques:

Pick and “Post a favorite line from your book boyfriend to his heroine. These are direct quotes from dialogue in a book. It is not a physical description of a male protagonist or a paragraph of dialogue. It is a line spoken by our favorite heroes to their lucky ladies or guys!” ~Carrianne
